• GBS colonises 30% of adults in the UK
• 88000 babies per year become colonised
• 700 babies develop GBS infections
• 11% of infected babies die
• Another 6% develop long term problems
• GBS can also cause stillbirths & late miscarriages1
Most group B Strep infection in newborn babies can be prevented, yet it is the UK’s most common cause of life threatening infection in newborn babies. Without preventative medicine, 88,000 babies per year will become colonised and 700 babies a year will develop infection. Most recover fully, but around 75 will die and another 40 survivors will be left with problems. GBS colonises 30% of adults in the UK and can also cause stillbirths and late miscarriages.
PREVENTION
Most GBS infections can be prevented by giving all women with GBS intravenous antibiotics at the onset of labour. This reduces the risk of early onset GBS infection developing in a baby born to a woman carrying GBS at the time of delivery from around 1 in 300 to less than 1 in 6000.
DETECTION
Pregnant women are not routinely tested for GBS but the test is available to all at our Laboratory. The method for testing is an enriched culture medium specifically designed for the isolation of GBS in swabs. Two swabs (lower vaginal and rectal) need to be cultured at 35-37 weeks’ gestation, and can be easily taken by yourself or your midwife, and results are sent to both of you. No midwife or consultant referral is needed and it remains YOUR choice.

Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is a UK charity, founded in 1996. Their three main aims are to:
•Offer information and support to families affected by group B Streptococcus;
•Inform health professionals and individuals how most group B Strep infections in newborn babies can be prevented;
•Generate continued support for research into preventing group B Strep infections in newborn babies.
Group B Strep Support believe that every woman should be informed about group B Strep and offered the opportunity to have a sensitive test to detect GBS carriage late in pregnancy.
